Are you in a club?
- 2 out of 10 people in the group were in a club
- Most of the people in the group didn't know what kind of clubs Massey has
- Most are too busy for clubs
When you first came to Massey (first years) did you know that there were clubs?
- most said no
- it was too daunting to go to a club in first year
- people who lived in the Cube for their first year of Massey new about some
- the people who lived at home (not in the city) didn't know anything about the clubs
- it was not worth coming in for the clubs if you didn't already live close to university
Do you think that the clubs at Massey are advertised well?
- no
- sometimes on posters on walls but they didn't pay much attention to them
- some people from the clubs came to speak to them in lectures, etc
How do you feel about the commitment to a club?
- they didn't know anyone (in first year) so it was to daunting to go
- they didn't feel confident enough to go
- most couldn't be bothered
- too busy to go
- it wasn't worth traveling into town for
After we explained our idea to the group, we received some feedback;
- look at the Victoria university clubs (e.g. the law club)
- Victoria university club culture
- special clubs
- e.g. the 'vuwsa' card (incentive to join)
- first years don't know about clubs until they're here
- victoria uni club days have people who are running the days in named/ designated t-shirts
- banter and brews (run by forth years)
- run by the students/ seniors
- open to outsiders?
- promoting outside of campus (college intro trips)
- American college culture vibe
- events will create a reputation/ vibe for Massey
- traditions
- certain things that happen every year
- have to do certain things to get in to the clubs?
- sports day (like at high school)
- competition
- "squad" relates to Taylor Swifts squad but feels exclusive
- "squad" feels like action, team, popularity, exclusive
