Dossier context

Price:
Most of Massey University's big event are run by MAWSA who are a non-profit organisation. They receive grants from the University for events each year such as the Massey students ball, etc. Most of the smaller events such as Massey club days are free event that promote the facilities that Massey provides.

product:
The students of Massey University feel that there are not enough event to bring the campus together and that the clubs that Massey provides are not successful. Massey has around thirty clubs, ranging from student associations to sporting clubs. Even though they provide clubs, majority of students, mainly first year students, are not aware that they are available. The events at Massey are few, leading with the biggest event; Orientation week. The events that follow after this are smaller and have less 'hype' leading up to them. They include the ball, open days, workshops, exhibitions, etc. Some of the smaller events are often but only target certain areas of the campus. No event at Massey includes the entire campus at this point.

Place:
Massey University is located just out of the central business district of Wellington City and is very close to other facilities such as sports grounds and businesses. Most events are held on the campus grounds and the club meetings or gatherings are set in the MAWSA area. Massey has potential to hold events at their campus or extend to other places in Wellington such as the basin reserve or the Westpac stadium.

Promotion:
Massey's events are mainly promoted online, through Facebook pages and the MAWSA site. Other promotions include posters around the campus and word of mouth by speakers promoting their events in lectures or through peers. Massey has the potential to promote the campus and inform students because of the smaller amount of students compared to other universities. Massey has 3349 students enrolled in 2016 which would be an easier amount of people to communicate to, compared to other universities.

Competition:
Massey university's direct competition is Victoria University of Wellington. Located in Kelburn, Victoria is extremely close to Massey and shares the same advantages of being close to the Wellington central business district. Victoria university holds many events, the larger ones being similar to Massey events; Orientation week, Balls, etc. Victoria has its own culture and is reflected in the events they run. As for clubs, Victoria provides 132 clubs ranging from all categories. The defining differences between the two universities are the culture and student life on campus. Victoria is known for its vibrant and welcoming ways.

James Everett, 20, Commerce student "the Victoria University culture is fun, vibrant, and open. It's welcoming and relaxing"

Macro trends

Target audience:

  • First year students
  • Returning students
  • Prospective students
  • Staff
  • Public
This event is aimed mainly at the first year students but it also encourages the returning students to be exited, motivated and have a positive attitude about returning to study. It will also involve the staff and make them feel excited to return each year. The event will be annually and will hopefully create a culture for Massey. This culture will be recognised by people wanting to attend Massey in the future and the public and will therefore create a positive outlook of the student life and campus.

  • alone
  • nervous
  • scared
  • uninformed
  • anxious
  • lonely
  • worried
  • unconfident
Jessica is just starting at Massey University and is nervous about her first year of tertiary study and being away form home. Jessica wants to be apart of the university life and make some new friends while doing so. She wants to be involved in the campus activities and maybe join a club or two, but she doesn't know where to look considering that she is new. She finds it hard to source information about upcoming events and she is too shy to ask her peers about them.

returning students
  • unmotivated
  • not exited
  • tired
  • nervous
  • uninformed
James is returning to his second year of study at Massey University. He feels pretty good about his first year but he is still in relax mode from the end of year break. James doesn't feel excited or motivated for his second year of university because there is no 'hype' or excitement about returning to study. Even though James is a second year student, he finds it hard to get involved with the campus activities because he doesn't follow the MAWSA page or know where to get any information about upcoming events or activities.

Shared values:motivation
  • Massey pride
  • connecting to the campus
  • connecting to other students
  • facilitating the campus
  • having fun
  • bringing back the excitement
  • inspiration
  • being informed
main shared values:
  • connection
  • being informed
SWOT:

Strengths
  • small campus makes it easier to communicate to the students
  • Massey already have clubs so it will be easier to improve them rather than creating new clubs
  • Massey is close to useful facilities like the basin reserve which could hold future campus events
  • there s already some online information platforms like social media and the MAWSA page which can be improved to be more informative
Weaknesses
  • there is no connectivity with the whole campus
  • there is a lack of communication with aspects of the university
  • some information does not reach the students
  • Massey clubs are not successful at this moment
  • Massey has little promotion about upcoming events, etc which means that some students are unaware of them
  • Massey doesn't have a bog enough space on campus to include everyone in an event
  • there are spaces for clubs but they are not used
  • the club spaces do not feel welcoming and some students don't know where they are
  • there is a lack of culture at Massey
Opportunities
  • better information given to the students and the public will encourage more use out of the campus facilities
  • forming a culture of the campus
  • acknowledgement of Massey facilities e.g. clubs
  • bringing the campus together to connect as one
  • bringing pride to the campus and students
Threats

  • Prospective students choosing Victoria university over Massey because they have a better culture
  • if the clubs continue to be unsuccessful, they may get rid of them
  • student's negativity about the culture of Massey being spread by word of mouth will effect Massey's reputation.

Current transformation matrix:

Transformation

Massey university has the opportunity to connect as a whole but they choose to segregate groups of students who connect in their appropriate events, such as the Massey balls where they have them split into year groups.

Massey promotes bigger events well but most of the others are lost in the other announcements of the university. Most students are unaware of events or Massey facilities because of he lack of promotion. Most promotion is either online or through word of mouth between peers.

Experience

The experience of Massey is lacking connectivity between the whole campus. Connecting as one can bring pride and a culture to the university. The experience of Massey facilities such as events and clubs are underwhelming because of the lack of knowledge and promotion towards them.

Two way dialogue

Massey has two way dialogue between them and their students via online platforms and face to face interactions on club days or open days. The online platforms include MAWSA, Facebook pages and other social media pages. The club days or open days are every now and then and are only a few hours long. They are usually set in-between classes and in a neutral area such as the pyramid or on the grass area outside of Tussock. These days are good but the promotion is poor and most of the time students miss them, due to not knowing about them.

Recommended transformation matrix:

Transformation

Massey will provide an event run by students which connects the campus as a whole. It will be set at the beginning of the year, in the first semester. The event will connect Massey as a whole campus. It will contain too elements to it, including a games event and a intimate introductory club day/ support information. The games event will allow first years to ease into Massey and form new connections with the campus as a whole before the stress of classes begin. It will also allow the returning students and staff to be excited and motivated for the upcoming year by starting with a fun and interactive event. The introductions part will allow students to have in-depth conversations with staff, other students and leaders in a casual and relaxed environment. This will inform the students on the facilities that Massey provides and the events for the year to come.

Connection

The event focuses on connecting the campus as a whole and creating a Massey culture to be proud of. Students connect, but only in segmented groups. There is no connection with everyone at the campus. Bringing everyone together to connect at the beginning of each year, will create a tradition or a 'hype' which will excite and motivate students for the year to come.

Inform

The event also focuses on informing the students of Massey, while they are connecting as a whole. Providing intimate, face to face conversations about the Massey facilities such as clubs, and other events, will make the students feel comfortable and apart of the campus.

Individualised

The event will be run annually which will eventually create a tradition or 'hype' within the university and in the public. This will show a part of the new Massey culture which will give the students pride and feel proud that they are apart of that university. It will create a special, individualised bond between student and campus. Having the whole campus at one event will also give students the chance of seeking advice or hep from other students. This can also create bonds or friendships between students.

Sustained

The event will be run by the returning students and it will be aimed at the first year students. This system will continue as the first year students become the second year students and run the event for the following year. It will continue as long as there is a new flow of new students. It will also create a healthy competition as the new returning students can compete against or improve the last year's event.

Experience

The experience of the event will leave the students of Massey university feeling motivated, excited, informed, connected, confident, and welcomed.

Two way dialogue

The event will include multiple types of dialogue. Firstly it will improve the online platforms and promotions that Massey has now. This will make the students feel more digitally connected and informed. The event will hopefully build up 'hype' coming close to the event which will lead to word of mouth conversations about the excitement of the event. This also adds as promotion for the event. On the day of the event is when the most two way dialogue will commence as it will allows physical and verbal interactions with one another.

Big idea:

Masfest

Masfest is an event which connects the campus as a whole. It will be split into two parts, including Masgames and Maspack. The Masgames will be held off campus, at a larger location such as the Basin Reserve, so that the whole campus can be involved. It will include games and competitions such as the amazing race, athletics, capture the flag, team building exercises, and many more. The Masgames will include houses or teams which will allow for some healthy competition. Some kind of prize or trophy will be presented to the winning house at the end of the games as a incentive. After the Masgames, Maspack will conemce. Maspack is a introductory day for clubs, facilities, etc. It will allow students to have face to face conversations or support in a casual and relaxing setting.

The event will also include some DIY design. Because the Masgames will have houses, there has to be a way to differentiate one another. T-shirts will be worn to promote the university as well as tell the houses apart. Each house will create a logo/name which can then be stencilled and spray painted onto t-shirts which each student brings. This is also a great way to connect through a tertiary discipline.

Masfest will be run by a club. This club will be in charge of organising, promoting and setting up the event. It will be run by returning students and the roles will rotate each year between the old and new returning students. Having a club not only looks after the event, it promotes other clubs within Massey. The clubs are not successful at this moment in time but if Masfest is a success and run by a club, there are possibilities of clubs becoming more popular and facilitated at the campus.

Masgames connects the campus as a whole.

Maspack informs and supports the students.

Tensions:
  • Will the students contribute to the event?
  • Will the new returning students want to be apart of the Masfest club and organise the next years event?
  • Will Massey be able to fund the event?
  • Will there be other events on at the same time which students will go to instead?
  • Will it suit the university timetable? During the week or will it have to be in the weekend?
Benefits:
  • Connecting the campus as a whole
  • Creating a culture that the Massey students are proud of
  • Informing the students about the campus facilities and what it provides
  • Connects and informs a large amount of students. No need for repeating information.
  • Promotion of Massey university to the public

Positioning Maps

STUDENT Perspective - Below

 UNI Perspective - Below

We looked what events that occurred in wellington that a majority of students at uni might go to. We did it from both the uni and the students perspective so that we position our idea so that if the university were to implement the event that it would appeal to both the university and students as well.

THERE were also other events that happened during the year around wellington but thought not to included them since they often occurred more (e.g. Rugby Games)
THERE were also other events that happened in wellington that where promoted and a 'big' event but didn't include them as they were not promoted on the wellington website.

"Sports day" relating to Metlink City Safari

We noticed that our idea was similar to Melting's City Safari. Metlink creates a race around Wellington city and promotes themselves through t-shirts that the competitors wear during the race.

We were thinking of doing a similar idea of having t-shirts to promote Massey while the "sports day" is happening.

We realise that the cost of providing t-shirts to each student contributing to the "sports day", along with the print cost, will be out of the university's, clubs and MAWSA's price range so we have come up with a alternative.

Our alternative is for the competitors to bring a t-shirt of their own and have a logo spray painted on via a stencil on the day of the "sports day". This would be a cheaper way to promote the sport day/ Massey and get the students involved. Each team/ group could have their own design or colours.
