Tussock, Library and Pyramid Observation






Tussock - 8 AM - 9AM (Monday Morning) 
Quiet not many people here, feels relaxing.

People mainly come for a coffee and read/do work/study
Some come to have a chat/catchup
Staff come for coffees to go, some stay and do work for a while (30mins +)
Some comes for a light breakfast before class - scones, sandwiches, muffin, Takeaway food
High school students comes as well with their parents <?>

Getting busy closer to 9AM
People are getting louder while chattering, more people coming - a lot more chattering
People who were doing work mostly left

  • mainly alone
  • some group work (pairs)
  • lots of people in here

  • mainly students from block 12/ closer to library 
what are people doing?:
  • quiet
  • studying 
  • on laptops
  • on provided computers
  • design looking people on the macs 
  • other majors (business, etc) are on the pcs
  • getting help from the tech support/ librarians
  • small chatting of pairs
  • individual study
  • printing/ scanning
time in space?:
  • most people stay for a long time in the space
  • people who print, print then go
  • some people meet here then leave 
  • librarians are there all day
feeling? why?:
  • stressed
  • neutral - light study feels
  • feeling alone when studying alone
  • relaxed/ enjoys quiet
  • comfortable seating (couches)
  • pressured to study
hear?:
  • printer/ scanner
  • light chatting
  • paper crunching
  • paper/books turning
  • typing and clicking
  • talking to staff
  • beeping of the alarms
  • sliding door opening and closing
  • bag zips
  • bangs of people walking up and down the stairs (very loud)
mood? why?:

  • underwhelming

  • forced kind of study in a library
  • lack of motivation
how are people using space?:
  • slow 
  • frantic when its hand in week
  • long periods of time of studying
  • quick burst of pick ups
  • people come here to study
why is it like this?:
  • its a place to study so people feel obliged to do heavy study
  • people come to the library to study ( usually heavy study)
  • no motivation 
  • boring atmosphere
how could it be?:
  • interactive
  • have inspiration/ motivation
  • social/ quiet spaces (designated areas)
  • collaborative areas
user needs?:
  • quiet study areas
  • interactive areas
  • collaborative areas

insights?:
  • neutral space for all majors
  • mainly design/ block 12 or near majors use library (lots of fashion)
  • some eat in library - why not tussock?
  • some stay for very long periods of time

    Library second floor: (differences from above)

    • more group work (in designated group rooms)

    • more variety of books
    • quiet
    • people are more hidden away upstairs (hiding almost the rows of books)

    • posters on walls (advertising/ events)
    • portable coffee station
    what are people doing?:
    • walking through space 
    • lining up for coffee
    • going to student central
    • waiting to meet with people then leaving
    • going to tech support 
    • entrance to the business building
    •  leaving Massey
    • going through to the library/ book shop/ tussock
    • looking at posters on walls
    • little people sitting and staying in space
    time in space?:
    • longest time in space in waiting for coffee or waiting for a friend
    • fast passed trough space
    • short cut/ passage way through Massey
    feeling? why?:
    • neutral (nothing amazing in space)
    • rushed to class
    • tired (needing a coffee fix)
    hear?:
    • coffee machine
    • light chatting
    • footsteps walking through
    • sliding doors opening and closing
    • outside in carpark when sliding doors are open
    • staff talking
    mood? why?:
    • neutral
    • boring
    • needing to be somewhere else
    how are people using space?:
    • moving fast through the space
    • using space as a passageway
    • neutral space for all of university 
    • everyone knows where it is
    why is it like this?:
    • everyone knows where the pyramid is
    • neutral meeting space/passage for all majors
    • the one place that has all of the major building branching of it
    • its a way to move from one space to another
    how could it be?:
    • interactive
    • enjoyable
    • memorable
    • motivates people while walking through (e.g. major works on walls)
    • brings people together 
    • events
    user needs?:
    • short cut
    • passage way
    • meeting area
    • neutral between all of the university
    insights?:
    • meeting space 
    • fast paced through area
    • not really utilised unless people are walking thought space to get to another.
    • everyone knows the space but it doesn’t get used to bring people together.
